A young woman from the Iroquois Indian tribe in Canada is initiated into the Christian faith. Tekakwitha, meaning “She who advances in small steps,” is a beautiful Iroquois Indian girl. The adopted daughter of a pagan Indian chief, she was raised as a Christian by her mother, who was taken as a wife by the defeated rival tribe, without the tribe's knowledge, by her mother who taught her about Jesus and the Madonna. Her faith gives her the strength to not accept advantageous marriage proposals and she rebels. We are in the second half of the 17th century, her dream is baptism even if this means leaving the tribe. She devotes herself to helping others. She collaborates with the French missionaries to spread Christianity among the Indians. She dies at a young age. It is a shining example that the North American Indian woman, called “squaw” by the conquerors of North America, are slaves subjected to the will of men.
